Dive Melbourne FAQ

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How old do you need to be?

The minimum age is 13. We do offer a Pool only dive adventure for children called a Bubblemaker which covers basic theory and provides children them the opportunity to have a dive experience in the pool. With all diving participants under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must be available to sign the paperwork.

Do you need to have dived before?

We cater for people who haven’t even snorkeled before! All skills required will be taught on the day of the activity.

How many can do it?

The group ratio is 4 divers to 1 Instructor or 6 divers to an Instructor with a Divemaster assisting. Ratios are set to maximize diver safety, comfort and enjoyment. Groups are more than welcome and are broken into the correct ratios for the pool and dive component.

Do I need to be able to swim?

It is preferable to have some basic confidence in the water. A one on one dive can be arranged for those with a fear of water/swimming/claustrophobia.  If we find that you are not confident on the day and tiem permits, we will provide a one on one dive with the instructor at the end of the group session.

If you are currently taking any medication, please contact us.

Upon confirmation of your booking, you will receive a medical questionnaire which is a copy of the questionnaire you will fill on the day. If you answer YES to any of the questions, you will need to contact BAYPLAY on (03) 5984 0888 to discuss your options.

Dive Safe

Your diving safety is extremely important to us at Bayplay. We encourage you to follow SAFE diving practices (Safe Ascent From Every dive). We offer safety items for purchase in our retails store to maximise your health and wellbeing on the water. Safety equipment is an investment to give you peace of mind while in the water.

Your Diving Safety

Safety is a key component to having the most fun possible while scuba diving with us at Bayplay:

  • Make sure you have had a recent dive medical before you dive (essential if you are learning to dive)
  • Never dive with unfamiliar equipment
  • Never dive deeper than you’ve been trained to
  • Always be SAFE – avoid the dreaded bends
  • Invest in safety equipment

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend Diving Insurance as most travel insurers do not cover Scuba diving accidents. Our preferred provider is the Divers Alert Network (DAN).

Bayplay proudly supports DAN Asia-Pacific (DAN AP). The Divers Alert Network (DAN) is a global network of not-for-profit, member-based, dive safety organisations working for the safety of all divers through education, research and training.

DAN AP provides Worldwide Emergency Evacuation Coverage and optional Dive Injury (Treatment) Insurance Services for Members. In addition the organisation is responsible for funding and/or manning 24-hour diving emergency hotlines throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

DAN AP is a part of the International DAN Federation of Dive Safety Organisations with worldwide Membership presently exceeding 300,000.?Wherever members live or dive around the world they have peace of mind knowing that DAN is available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week to assist in the event of an accident/illness.

Why is it so important that as Divers we are protected with DAN Membership & Dive Injury (Treatment) Insurance? It’s all about being prepared for the unexpected, namely dive accidents and illnesses. It’s essential that divers have a reputable organisation to call that will be able to co-ordinate a rescue effort and get them to the most appropriate treatment for their injury or illness. And then there is the issue of cost. DAN protection ensures the diver will not be lumbered with the burden of a potentially hefty invoice in the event of an accident or illness.
