Dive Melbourne FAQ

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions

Dive Safe

Your diving safety is extremely important to us at Bayplay. We encourage you to use SAFE diving practices (Safe Ascent From Every dive). Before departing for your dive ensure you have everything you’ll need, any missing safety equipment can be rented or purchased from our retail store.

Your Diving Safety

Safety is a key component to having the most fun possible while scuba diving

  • Make sure you have reviewed our Dive Medical Form Link and if required get a medical check from a doctor (this is essential if it is your first time diving)
  • Never dive with unfamiliar equipment
  • Never dive deeper than you’ve been trained to
  • Always be SAFE – avoid the dreaded bends
  • Invest in safety equipment
  • Never dive alone – bring a friend!

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend diving insurance as most travel insurance companies do not cover scuba diving accidents. Our preferred provider is the Divers Alert Network (DAN).

Bayplay proudly supports DAN Asia-Pacific (DAN AP). The Divers Alert Network is a global network of not-for-profit, member-based, dive safety organisations working for the safety of all divers through education, research and training.

DAN AP provides worldwide emergency evacuation coverage and optional dive injury (treatment) insurance services for members. In addition, the organisation is responsible for funding and manning 24-hour diving emergency hotlines throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

DAN AP is a part of the International Divers Alert Network Federation of Dive Safety Organisations with a worldwide membership exceeding 250,000. Members around the world have peace of mind knowing that DAN is available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week to assist in the event of an accident/illness.

Why is it so important that as divers we are protected with DAN Membership & Dive Injury (Treatment) Insurance? It’s all about being prepared for the unexpected. It’s essential that divers have a reputable organisation to call that will be able to co-ordinate a rescue effort and get them to the most appropriate treatment for their injury or illness. What about the costs? DAN protection ensures the diver will not be lumbered with the burden of a potentially hefty invoice in the event of an accident or illness.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old do you need to be?
The minimum age is 13. We do offer a pool only dive adventure called a Bubblemaker which covers basic theory and provides children the opportunity to have a scuba diving experience. All diving participants under 18 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian available to sign the paperwork on the day of the dive.
Do you need to have dived before?
No, we can accommodate for people who haven’t even snorkelled before! All skills required will be taught on the day of the activity.
How many in a group?
For non-certified divers the ratio is 4 divers to 1 Instructor and qualified divers the ratio is 8 divers to 1 guide. Ratios are set to maximize diver safety, comfort and enjoyment. We will do our best to accommodate large groups bookings.
Do I need to be able to swim?
It is preferable to have some basic confidence in the water as you will be required to fully submerge into deep water. A one-on-one dive can be arranged for those with a fear of water/claustrophobia.  If we find that you are not confident on the day and time permits, we will provide a one-on-one dive with the instructor at the end of the group session.
Do I Need A Medical Certificate?

Please note that some medical conditions might prevent you from diving, including but not limited to: Respiratory conditions (asthma, wheezing, chronic bronchitis or sinus conditions, tuberculosis, collapsed lung, any history of chest surgery), diabetes, epilepsy or fainting, brain/spinal/heart disorders, ear surgery or discharge, high blood pressure or pregnancy. If you are currently taking any medication, please contact us.

Please review the dive medical questionnaire Dive Medical Form Link. If you answer YES to any of the questions, you will need to contact BAYPLAY on (03) 5984 0888 to discuss your options. Looking for a dive doctor? Use Spums Dive Doctors List.

Is it cold?
Water temperatures in Port Phillip Bay average between 14°C – 19°C. We provide thick 7mm scuba diving wetsuits and hoods to optimise warmth during your dive.
Is all the gear provided?
Yes, all required equipment and materials needed to dive are supplied.
Are meals available?
No, time is made available for a meal break. Please be sure to bring lunch or money to purchase lunch nearby.
